Opening of the Motion Acquisition and Analysis Laboratory

On July 9, 2024, the Motion Capture and Analysis Laboratory of the Department of Computer Science of the Lublin University of Technology was opened by the Rector of the Lublin University of Technology, professor Zbigniew Pater, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, professor Paweł Węgierek, and the Head of the Department of Computer Science, professor Tomasz Zientarski. The event took place in the Center of Innovation and Advanced Technologies of the Lublin University of Technology. The event was attended by the authorities of the Lublin University of Technology and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, employees of the Department of Computer Science, and invited scientists from the Medical University in Lublin and athletes.

During the presentation, the 8-camera optical passive motion acquisition system from Vicon, operating since 2014, integrated with two biomechanical platforms from AMTI and a 16-channel wireless EMG system for recording muscle activity, was discussed. The newly purchased optical active motion acquisition system from PhaseSpace, consisting of 28 cameras, recording movement at a frequency of up to 960Hz, was presented. The applications of the new laboratory in the analysis of three-dimensional movement in medicine, physiotherapy, sports or protection of intangible heritage were indicated. The new system allows for the creation of realistic and faithfully reflecting computer animations for the use of applications, games and films. The configuration of the system allowed for the enlargement of the acquisition area, as well as better registration of dynamic systems. The mobility of the system will allow for the registration of movement outside the laboratory.

Participants had the opportunity to observe how movement is registered during a motion capture session. A film presenting the applications of both systems was presented, as well as realistic animations developed on the basis of three-dimensional data registered with the new system.

The laboratory will enable the development of employees of the Department of Computer Science, strengthening cooperation between scientific units, and establishing new initiatives.
